SUCH AS THE AMOUNT OF TIME A PERSON HAS BEEN MISSING, SOME CHANGES TO TRASH AND RECYCLING PICKUPS ARE HAPPENING IN JEFFERSON PARISH THIS YEAR. WDSU REPORTER SHAY O’CONNOR IS LIVE IN METAIRIE, WITH SOME DETAILS ON THOSE CHANGES AND HOW IT WILL IMPACT RESIDENTS. SHAY. GOOD EVENING TO YOU. YEAH, PEOPLE HERE IN JEFFERSON PARISH CAN ACTUALLY EXPECT TO PAY ABOUT $10 MORE A MONTH NOW FOR THE AT LEAST THE LAST TEN YEARS HERE IN JEFFERSON PARISH, WE’RE TOLD THAT RECYCLING AND TRASH WAS PRETTY MUCH TIED TOGETHER AS ONE FEE. NOW, THE JEFFERSON PARISH DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS SAYS THE FEES WILL GO FROM AROUND $20 A MONTH TO ABOUT $30 A MONTH. NOW. YESTERDAY, THE PARISH OFFICIALLY TRANSITIONED TO A NEW COLLECTOR. THAT’S RIVER BIRCH RENEWABLE ENERGY. THE PREVIOUS CONTRACT WITH WASTE COLLECTIONS CAME TO AN END. NOW RIVER BIRCH WILL CONTINUE WITH THE TWO DAY PICKUPS ON BOTH THE EAST AND WEST BANK. PARTS OF UNINCORPORATED JEFFERSON PARISHES, AS WELL AS IN JEAN LAFITTE. THE PARISH COUNCIL CHOSE A NEW RECYCLING PROVIDER IN DECEMBER THAT WILL ACTUALLY CAUSE A GAP IN RECYCLING SERVICE UNTIL THE CONTRACT WITH WASTE IS APPROVED, BUT PEOPLE WON’T BE CHARGED FOR RECYCLING SERVICES UNTIL THAT’S COMPLETED. SOME PEOPLE I SPOKE WITH TODAY SAY THEY DON’T WANT TO HAVE TO PAY THE ADDITIONAL FEES AT ALL, SO I THINK WE PAY A PLENTY ENOUGH FOR RECYCLING AND FOR, YOU KNOW, FOR TRASH PICKUP IN GENERAL. SO I MEAN, IT’S NOT SOMETHING I’D BE INTERESTED IN, CONTINUE TO KEEP THINGS AS IS. WHY, WHY, WHY WOULD WE CHANGE? EVERYTHING’S FINE. I MEAN, IF RIVER BIRCH IS JUST AS GOOD AS WHO WE HAVE NOW, THEN THAT’S FINE. THAT’S GREAT. BUT I’M JUST WONDERING WHY. WHY WOULD YOU CHANGE? NOW, I’M TOLD THAT TRASH PICKUPS WILL REMAIN THE SAME FOR THE MOST PART, EXCEPT FOR A SMALL PART OF MARRERO. YOU CAN ACTUALLY VISIT OUR WEBSITE. THAT’S WDSU DOT COM FOR MORE ON THOSE PICKUPS IN YOUR AREA. REPORTING LIVE FROM METAIR
